Medicare
What is Medicare?
Medicare is a social insurance program administered by the United States government, providing health insurance coverage to people who are either age 65 and over, or who meet other special criteria. It was originally signed into law on July 30, 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson as an amendment to Social Security legislation.
At the bill-signing ceremony President Johnson enrolled former President Harry S. Truman as the first Medicare beneficiary and presented him with the first Medicare card. In 2007, Medicare provided health care coverage for 43 million Americans. Enrollment is expected to reach 77 million by 2031, when the baby boom generation is fully enrolled.[1]
Medicare Overview
Medicare was established to help pay basic healthcare needs for people ages 65 and over, but it was never intended to cover all medical expenses. Over time, the cost of items not covered by Medicare has grown to the point where it is often more than an individual can afford to pay...
...To help cover the remaining out-of-pocket medical costs Medicare Supplement insurance policies help individuals pay for these items that Medicare excludes from it's core benefits. These items include:
-
Medicare deductibles
-
Hospital and medical care co-insurance
-
Extended hospital care
-
Physician’s services, hospital outpatient services and supplies
-
Ambulance services
Additionally, with Medicare Supplement insurance plans:
-
You choose your own doctors – no need to select a primary care physician
-
No referrals are needed to see a specialist
-
Virtually no claim forms to fill out – medicare pays your providers directly so you don’t need to file claims yourself
-
Coverage is guaranteed renewable for life
